Frequently Asked Questions About Grünwelt Electricity
From switching providers to meter readings
Your switch to Grünwelt Energie
By switching to an electricity plan from Grünwelt Energie, you’ll enjoy multiple benefits: Thanks to our lean organizational structure, we offer affordable rates and provide you with 100% sustainable green electricity—certified by TÜV NORD—generated from European hydropower. This is good for the environment and easy on your wallet at the same time. Of course, we don’t skimp on service—our friendly customer service representatives are here to assist you with advice and support for all your energy supply needs.
Any electricity customer with their own meter can switch to us conveniently and securely. To do so, first enter your ZIP code and your electricity usage into our rate calculator, and you’ll receive a no-obligation price quote. Then simply click the “Order” button, and we’ll guide you step by step through the ordering process—via an encrypted connection, of course. At the end, you’ll receive an order confirmation that you can print out for your records. Just a few days later, you’ll receive your contract confirmation from us. In the meantime, we’ll take care of all the formalities. If necessary, we’ll cancel your old electricity contract and switch you over to our affordable rates exactly on the delivery date, without any interruption to your power supply.
If you rent an apartment with its own electricity meter, you can easily switch to us. The same applies if you rent a house. If you live in an apartment building and do not have your own electricity meter, you should discuss switching to us with your landlord or property management company, as the meter may be shared among several residents.
To switch electricity providers, you will need your electricity meter number, the market location ID (MaLo ID), your electricity consumption for the past year, and your customer number from your current provider. You can usually find all this information on your most recent electricity bill. We also need your billing address for your order, as well as a direct debit authorization or a SEPA mandate if required. All data is transmitted via an encrypted connection and handled in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Data Protection Act.
You generally do not need to cancel your existing electricity contract yourself, as you can grant us power of attorney to do so as part of your order. We will then cancel your old electricity contract on your behalf in time for the start of service and handle all the necessary paperwork. The only exception: If you wish to switch to us due to a price adjustment or another short-notice termination option, you should cancel your contract yourself due to the tight timeline. In this case, please let us know the end date of your contract when placing your order.
No, of course there are no fees for switching to us.
If you are already a Grünwelt Energie customer and would like to place another order, please give us a call—our friendly service experts will be happy to work with you to explore the options available for your contract. You can reach our customer service team using the contact information provided.
Delivery date: How long will the switch take?
There are legally mandated timeframes for switching electricity providers that all suppliers must adhere to. Unless your current contract specifies longer notice periods, it takes us about four weeks from the time you place your order until service begins. Shortly after you place your order, we will send you a contract confirmation with an estimated start date for service. We will then cancel your old electricity supply contract and register your supply point with the relevant grid operator. Both your previous supplier and the grid operator must confirm these steps to us. Once we have the green light from both, we will immediately inform you of the good news with a supply confirmation.
We do our very best to meet your requested delivery date. However, in order to switch providers, we also need to coordinate with your current provider and the local network operator. If any issues arise, we will of course notify you immediately and work to find a solution right away so that we can get you connected as soon as possible.
Yes, even if your old contract still has some time left on it, you’re welcome to place an order with us in advance. The remaining term of your old contract can be up to 12 months.
Yes, if you exercise your right to terminate the contract early, you can let us know the contract end date when you place your order. We will then schedule your delivery accordingly.
Your utility provider will contact you to obtain your meter readings at the start and end of your electricity service. We recommend that you always provide your meter readings to your utility provider as well and make a note of them for your records.
No, due to legal regulations, it is impossible for your electricity supply to be interrupted when you switch providers. The local backup provider ensures a continuous supply of electricity at all times—even if a problem were to arise.
Payment and Billing
We first calculate your estimated bill for the coming year and then divide it into equal monthly installments so that the difference at the end of the billing period is as small as possible. You will find the exact amount and payment dates in your order confirmation. You can pay your installments via SEPA direct debit or bank transfer.
The base rate is a fixed annual fee included in your contract and is billed on a monthly basis. The usage rate is the variable charge per kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed.
The estimated bill amount for the coming year is divided into monthly installments so that the difference at the end of the billing year is as small as possible. To calculate this, your consumption is multiplied by the rate per kilowatt-hour, and the annual base fee is added. The result is then divided among the individual months to determine the monthly installment amount. Any new customer bonus that may have been agreed upon is not included in the monthly installments, as this will be paid out to you on the dates specified in the contract.
To calculate your estimated bill, we use your most recent known annual consumption. If you’d like to change your estimated bill amount during the year, you can request this from our customer service team when you submit a meter reading. If your annual consumption has changed, we’ll adjust your estimated billing plan accordingly.
After one year of service, we will first ask you to provide us with your meter reading. We will then use this reading, along with information from your local utility provider, to generate your consumption bill for the past year and send it to you.
Our affordable electricity rates are made up of a variety of price components. In addition to procurement and distribution costs, these include grid fees, government-mandated charges, and taxes and levies. You can view the price components in detail on our Electricity Price Information page.
For some plans, we offer a new customer bonus. This bonus may be provided as a percentage credit applied to the total cost of electricity supply during the first year of service, or as a bank transfer made a certain number of days after service begins. The specific terms and conditions, as well as the amount of the bonus, depend on your plan and are clearly outlined for you in your order form, the Terms and Conditions, and the contract confirmation.
If we have agreed to a limited price guarantee, we may not change prices during this period. Exceptions to this include changes to the EEG surcharge, the CHP surcharge, the surcharge under Section 19 of the StromNEV, the offshore liability surcharge, the surcharge for interruptible loads, the concession fee, and the electricity and sales taxes. Excluded are also price changes to the extent that new taxes, levies, or other government-imposed charges or exemptions affecting the procurement, generation, grid use (transmission and distribution), or consumption of electrical energy take effect in the future. Section 6 of our General Terms and Conditions applies to price changes.
Moving and Moving In
Please let us know about your move at least two weeks in advance, for example via our contact form. We would be happy to continue providing our services at your new address at our competitive rates. Please contact us by phone or email, and we will be happy to provide you with an attractive quote.
If you are the first occupant to move into a new property and would like to be supplied with electricity at Grünwelt’s competitive rates, this may take up to 2 business days. Otherwise, the local utility company will initially provide you with electricity on a temporary basis at your new residence. Please let us know your desired start date for service when placing your order.
When you move into an apartment, we will need information from you, including your planned move-in date and the meter number for that apartment. You can usually obtain this information by contacting your future landlord.

At the end of each billing year, we will ask you to take a reading of your meter and submit it online. In addition, the local utility may take readings.
In the event of power outages, your local utility company remains your point of contact, just as before. The utility is required to continue resolving these issues. We pay a usage fee for the operation and maintenance of meters and the power grid, which is already included in your bill.
All personal data we receive from you in connection with the electricity supply contract will be handled in strict compliance with applicable data protection laws. Our affordable electricity flows through the power grid to your home connection, just as it always has. We use the existing pipes and cables for this purpose, for which we pay a usage fee to the power grid operator. These fees are, of course, already included in your electricity bill.
